Main Page

Overview

These pages provide a collection of chess opening lines selected using two competing criteria: the opening line must be seen in human Master play and the expected outcome must be biased towards one side. Popularity in human master play was estimated using total entries in three databases: ChessBase Big Database, Caissabase and ICCF Opening Master Database. Bias was obtained from the evaluated openings Chess Cloud Database (also known as dbcn). The collection was assembled by Bas Braams with motivation from the Top Chess Engine Competition (TCEC).

Notation

In most places on sub-pages of this main page an opening line carries an annotation of the form (<a>cp, <b>cp; <c>/M, <d>%). The entries have the following meaning.
<a>: Evaluation of the position according to dbcn and expressed in centipawns (cp), from the perspective of the side to move.
<b>: Value in centipawns of the final move of the opening line, relative to the best available move, according to dbcn.
<c>: Popularity of the position in occurences per million games (expressed as 1/M) in the database underlying these pages.
<d>: Ratio of popularity after the final move to popularity of the position before the final move.
Please note that the dbcn scores vary over time as the database evolves and data on these pages are lagging behind the dbcn source. For each opening line links are given to the relevant entry in dbcn and also to entries in chess.com Opening Explorer (here denoted as ccoe) and in 365chess.com Opening Explorer (here denoted as c365). However, one needs a chess.com or 365chess.com subscription in order to have all the benefits of those links.

This is not an opening book

This document is meant as a resource for an opening book, but it is not itself an opening book. The collection is not balanced; for example, it contains many biased lines in the Dutch Defense and not so many in the main line Ruy López Opening. The collection contains lines with a wide range of bias, much wider than one would want for an opening book for one event, and also lines with a wide range of popularity. Some lines may have a rather boring PV even if the outcome is uncertain, for example due to a quick trade of major pieces.
An actual opening book will have to be assembled with more attention for balance between different categories of openings, more attention for the desired range of bias (which depends on the event) and for the desired level of familiarity in human games, attention for interesting development of the PV, avoidance of near duplicates, and other criteria. Lines that are selected as candidates for an opening book may be inspected more closely for suitability. So, just to be clear again, this document is not an opening book.
